Coopers images contain an imaginative narrative that relates to archetypal themes with a distinct spiritual content. The playful, relaxed atmosphere of the images is constructed by the use of undulating markings and a confident use of colour.
The narratives are simultaneously semi-autobiographical and universal as they speak of the spiritual, emotional or creative challenges or questions we all experience. Liberation from the mundane is achieved by nudity of characters and abandoned objects. Animals within the images add to the playfulness while being icons of life traits such as imagination, innocence or reliability.
In 2001 Cooper was elected Royal Academician and In June 2004 made her first appearance in Scotland with a solo show of paintings, prints and drawings at the Glasgow Print Studio.
